Washburn Law Spring Start Program
Students may start law school at Washburn University School of Law in January through the Spring Start Program. Washburn Law enrolls about 25 new law students for the spring semester, providing an alternative to those who do not want to wait for the traditional summer or fall starts.
Designed to give students a "Fast Track" to graduation
Students starting in spring may participate in the Fast Track Accelerated Program, expediting their studies and graduating in two calendar years, the shortest amount of time allowed by the American Bar Association.
- Students can enroll at Washburn Law in January;
- complete the required 90-credit hour curriculum in two calendar years
(i.e., two academic years and two full summer sessions); - graduate law school in December;
- take the February bar exam; and
- begin their legal careers.
Participation in the Fast Track program is optional.
Benefits of the Spring Start Program
Students starting in spring receive all the benefits of a fall start with a more intense and personalized experience.
- Greater flexibility: Students may graduate in two or three years.
- Affordability: Students who choose to accelerate their studies have the opportunity to reduce cost-of-living expenses by as much as one-third.
- Smaller class size: Although Washburn Law has a low faculty to student ratio, a spring start allows for even greater interaction with professors and fellow students.
- First Week Program: This unique experience for entering students focuses on study skills and provides personalized acclimation into law school life.
Why Washburn Law?
Washburn Law, one of three law schools in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area, is located in the capital city of Kansas. It provides the benefits of a private institution at a public school cost.
- Resident tuition for the 2008-2009 academic year for 30 credits is $15,750.
- Out-of-state students may obtain resident tuition in six months.
- Topeka is one of the most affordable housing markets in the country. Apartment living is as affordable as $600 a month (and often lower) for a two-bedroom unit.
- Students receive more than $1.6 million in scholarships each year. Nearly half of the student body receives scholarship awards from Washburn Law. More than 20 percent of entering students receive nearly full resident tuition scholarships; some receive more.
Washburn Law was established in 1903 and in 1923 was one of the original group of law schools to receive ABA accreditation. It is a practice-centered law school continually on the move. Independent student surveys rank us significantly higher than comparison schools in a number of areas from quality of relationships with faculty and law school environment to academic advising and career counseling. Our Legal Analysis, Research, and Writing curriculum has been named a national Top 30 Program for the second year in a row. The curriculum is energized by four signature programs:
- Center for Law and Government
- Center for Excellence in Advocacy
- Business and Transactional Law Center
- Children and Family Law Center.
The live-client clinical program, for nearly 40 years, has provided an on-campus law firm setting where students represent real clients under the close supervision of faculty. The Externship Program enhances legal education through off-campus placements, which provide hands-on experience working on assignments that impact the lives of the people involved.
